Mastering Session 2 Voting

<< < (2/4) > >>

Silent Bob:
1. This is probably my second choice, but didn't tone down the overpowering resonances in the low-mids and is too heavily limited IMO.

2. Not bad at first but the low end is uneven and it's a bit heavily compressed.  The level actually drops at the highpoints, vs. the sparse intro.  Interestingly, it almost nulls (and sometimes does for brief moments) with #1 during soft passages if I match the levels.  It's the loud parts that sets #1 above this one.

3. I chose this one because it maintains stereo separation and dynamics.  More effort should probably have been made to bring out low level detail at the beginning though.

4. Nice & clear, but also heavily compressed.  Where it should get louder, it distorts instead.

Across the board, I found it strange how much compression was used in most of the entries.  I can only relate to what few jazz albums I own, but I find that loudness isn't nearly as much of a concern as with rock, country, pop etc.  Jazz guys are in it for the excitement and leveling/compressing takes out the emotional impact.  I also found it interesting that the stereo separation was diminished on all but #3 as well.

Dino Ziogas:
Main differences between 1&4 in your opinion?

Silent Bob:
I'd say 4 is clearer on the softer parts, but painfully compressed on louder parts.  1, while heavily limited for the sake of level, does so in a more transparent way.

Here's my critique I ran analysis on each (the key is PK: highest peak level, RMS: Average level entire tune.  RMSC : Avg
level entire tune compensated for ear response at 78dBSPL   I20: same as RMSC but for highest 20 second passage)

submission1 - Kanica J

Pk -0.2
RMS: -11.4
RMSC: - 12.4 I20: -10.9

Overall Good but unnatural high-end boost that causes ear irritation on the horns at the ewnd (in other words an unnatural
metalic sound).  This kind of sound was in the original master but seem worse in the master.  Dynamics are OK but loud
passes seem a bit less dynamic that they should be - especially the loud part at :45

submission 2 - pyrael

Pk: -0.6
RMS -15.2
RMSC: -16.7 I20: -16.1

Overall truer representation of the original mix sound but loudness not competative.  Has original extra-metallic sound to
horns and snare.  Lower register of horns better.

submission 3 - Silent Bob

Pk: -0.3
RMS - 15.7
RMSC: -16.6 I20: -14.4

It seems as though this master was done of a different mix.  The posted mix didn't have "Hit it Marty" at the top.  The top of
the tune is VERY low making this very weak sounding.

Submission 4 - Dino

Pk: -0.5
RMS:  -14.1
RMSC: -14.9  I20: 13.4

The extra-metalic sound of high-end is extra irritating on this mix - the cymbal hits sound like metal mush.  Best overall
dynamics and I would vote for this except for the high end. Another very positive point is how those count-in stick hits where
taken out - I think it's a mistake not to (unless specifically requested by the client).

So overall i't a tossup for me between 1 & 4.  I'll go with 1 as having a more natural tone rather than 4 which has more
natural dynamics.  I'll forgive the inclusion of the sticks because this is SOMETIMES included by request.

I really hate to do this, but I have to declare NO Contest.  Master 3 was done on a different mix than the rest.  Comparing the mnastering on one mix to the mastering on a different mix is like comparing apples to oranges.  Was the mixing better or the mastering?  This could have been an error on SB's part or I possibly uploaded the wrong mix to be mastered.  Doesn't matter to the contest, we can;t declare a winniner with one vote or a winning for mastering a different mix.

We'll be continung the Blind Voting and SB say he will do the same for the mixing contest. I'll post the new contest tonite.
