pyrael:
1) Full mix. easiest way I can say it. It's not frilly, no obvious tricks, and keeps the energy of the music. The left panned bass is also quite nostalgic.
2) love the inclusion of the background BS at the beginning!! This and #1 are the two I have been bouncing between for my vote. They both are raw and open.
3) Bass seems lost on this one. Well addressed bleed, but the bass is just not there.
4) Too Commercial for the song!! Good addressing of the bleed. Bottom is OK but not as clear as 1 or 2, Guitars are very different.
And the vote goes to....
#2. The lead is what did it for me. it's not the cleanest sound, and even slightly irritating. But this is a punk song, not commercialized "New Wave" ;D
ETA: oops didn't realize we are to vote on TWO, so my vote is #1 AND #2 ;D
Silent Bob:
#1, Dirty and raw, but fits the bill. The bass is a little high in the mix IMO while the vocals are a touch on the thin side.
#2, Nice vocal sound but the instruments seem a bit strong in the upper mids. It's really trashy, but I don't think that's necessarily bad in this case.
#3, Good balance, but it sounds very artificially boosted in the extreme lows and highs especially. The "air" of it is really irritating. I can also hear the scratch voice in the background that I can't hear on the other mixes.
#4, Where did the mids in the instruments go? They're in the vocals. The hollow vocals actually kind of works, but it seems like the mixer tried too hard to "control" the sound of the instruments.
#1 and #2 get my vote because they were true to the "Just shut up and get it done!" nature of the song IMO while the other two tried to hard at making it into something else.
pyrael:
someone did a single vote for #2. whoever you are, please remove your vote and re-vote for 2? thanks much! 8)
Dino Ziogas:
A really fun song here!
Here's the rundown:
(1) A solid effort. Good balance, mix elements are easily heard, vocal blends well with the music, I can hear the bass which I like since it drives the song imo. The mix respects the tracks and even though the vocals are not as full as I'd like it gets a vote!
(2) Nice touch with the intro but the sound is rather too strong in the upper mids for my taste and overall a bit thrashy. Funny thing is that this mix is a good one - nice blend and probably the best vocal sound.
(3) Bass gets lost, snare sound is a bit irritating, overall it's overprocessed and doesn't sell the song to me.
(4) This also gets my vote. The mixer obviously changed the song character but did so in a competent manner. There are signs of overprocessing but in a good way (unlike say, 3). I'm a minority here but I really liked this mix on first listen.
Often the goal of the production determines which mix gets the approval. For a true-to-the-roots approach it would be 1 or 2 [clearly 1 for me though] but I really liked what the mixer did for #4.
