Well, this contest is a bit different.  Since this is a recent (ish) project and I know the client personally, I'm going to take a more real world approach to this one.  In the real world, the client pays the bills and they get the final say on what's good.  I'm compiling the mixes to a test CD for him so he can listen in his car, computer, wherever he normally listens to music and rank each mix according to his preferences, taking notes on each one.  He is not a member here and won't see our comments, so I'm opening the thread for discussion on what we did/how first.  I recommend all participants, seven in all, talk about their approach to the mix.

Disclaimer; the client is only available at times I'm working at another studio and he's not willing to wait till his schedule opens in the afternoon to complete the project.  I recommended another studio in town to handle the mixing, so he could get the work done in a timely manner.   In short, I am not doing the mix on this and he will only hear my mix on a level-matched CD of all submissions.  I matched the levels of the submissions so that he will make his decision based on sound quality and preference only.  Of the seven submissions, two were about the ideal level, one was a couple dB low and the remaining four were too hot, so I compensated for them, using the THX standard level as reference.  I will post the mixes and the client's notes together after he has made his decision.

May the discussion begin!

I'm hoping to enter the next contest. I'm still in the building process for my "Dungeon". But I think at the very least, it will be a great way to find out where the flaws in my room are!!

See ya next contest!

Hey all. I'm new to this board :) I'm very excited to have found this community, and hopefully will be able to contribute. I'm uploading my mix right now. I had a blast mixing this one. Reminds me of old Deep Purple. LOVE it!! I fiddled around quite a bit with the snare to get a fatter "pop" using a hefty amount of compression (parallel) and some transient shaping. It was a challenge, but I think it sits better in the mix now. Excited to hear everyone's mixes!

Recording / Developing Artist Productions

Recording Institute of Detroit has formed a music label (called Developing Artist Productions) where all of the work needed for the label will be done by RID interns under the supervision of school staff.  Actually we are really restarting the label "New Records" that had several very successful releases between 1990 and 2000.  RID feels that this may let graduates hone the skills they learned about in class.  There's noting better than doing it to get good.

You can read about what we are doing at http://www.recordinginstitute.com/dap.htm

Bear in mind that bass instrument speakers are different from P.A. speakers.  P.A. speakers have slightly different construction to keep the frequency response as flat as possible while instrument speakers allow a spike in the presence range and roll of the lows more gradually.  Also, P.A. speakers are not meant to be over-driven and will get fried or rip if you push them too hard.  Instrument speakers allow heat to radiate faster and have tougher surrounds so they can be over-driven without damage.  I'm not saying it will be a bad speaker for you at all, just remember it will handle differentle from say, the legendary JBL K-140 that make me cry every time I realize their limited number in the world is dwindling.

It's an Eminence 15600. it has another number on it that google returns nothing on, I'm thinking its the date code? The 15600's were made between 86 and 92 so I'm assuming this one was made in 86. the other number (date code?) is 67-8611 I'm guessing here, but from my experience with date codes if it is, it would be #67 from the line made the 11th week of '86. just a guess though. either way, its a 15" 600w pro-audio speaker. if you can find out more, I'd be interested to know lol. it has spring loaded clips for raw wire connection and it's a HEAVY large magnet etc.

I also have 2 12" 70w speakers. unsure the actual brand on those.
