BASIC DRUM MICROPHONE PLACEMENT

Drum kit pickup:  Kick Drum

Microphone type:  Dynamic, preferably a large-diaphragm model like EV-RE-20

Placement notes:  Back skin of drum removed

 
 

Drum kit pickup: Snare Drum

Microphone:  High quality dynamic with hypercardiod pattern, such as the Shure Beta 57

Placement notes:  Point rejection of mic at the high hat. Bottom mic is optional.

 

Drum kit pickup: High Hat

Microphone:  Condenser microphone such as AKG 414

Placement notes:  Mic angled away from center of kit along "axis of rotation" of top cymbal.

 

Drum kit pickup: Tom

Microphone:  High quality dynamic with hypercardiod pattern, such as the Shure Beta 57

Placement notes:  Point rejection of mic at the nearest cymbal.

 

Drum kit pickup: Overhead Kit / Cymbals

Microphone:  High quality condenser microphones with cardioid pattern such as AKG 414

Placement notes:  X-Y Micing about 2 feet above highest cymbal
